Fro-Yo–50% off Mogli Yogli

Posted on August 30, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Fro-yo!

Frozen yogurt has been around ever since I can remember, but there was only TCBY (because it really WAS the country’s best) and I can’t forget about Colombo and Freshens. But, those three establishments were literally the only places to get frozen yogurt when I was growing up in Metro Atlanta and now there’s a fro-yo shop on every corner.

Yes, I called it fro-yo, hesitantly, but that’s what all the kids are saying these days so I guess I have to get with it. I don’t mind this resurgence of fro-yo one bit, I love it actually! I went to the grand opening of a new establishment called Menchie’s in Toco Hill last Friday and they were giving away free cups of fro-yo. It was some of the best fro-yo I’ve had in a while and they had a smorgasbord of flavors and toppings. But, I haven’t been to Yogli Mogli yet, so I could be speaking prematurely. Good thing Living Social’s deal of the day is 50% off Yogli Mogli yogurt!

All you have to do is pay $5 and you’ll get $10 worth of Yogli Mogli yogurt. An awesome deal for an awesome nightcap to a date. Or just take the kids for a cup of fro-yo. Get the deal and visit the Atlanta store off of Oxford Road and serve your self some deliciousness just 15 minutes from home.

Beer. Bier. Birra. Cerveza. However you want to say it, it tastes good and good for you! Drinking beer in moderation can help decrease the chances of stroke by 20% and contains the vitamin B6 which helps prevent the build-up of homocysteine, an amino acid that has been linked to heart disease. And there are loads more health benefits of beer if you want to continue the knowledge bombs…read on!

Nice pour.

Or you can just get your ticket to Saturday’s German Bierfest being held in Woodruff Park. It’s the 7th annual Atlanta German Bierfest, so that means it’s already proven its worth and looking at pictures from last year’s Fest, a grand time! I like most beer fests ( I went to the Dunwoody Beerfest in May), but German-themed ones are so much better! It lies in the beers; they’re better tasting and a tad bit stronger than most others. Can you say 11% ABV EKU Doppelbock?

There will be 30 other beers at this year’s fest  for you to sample as well as local band The Conditionals, Bavarian band The Bavarian Express and DJ Eric ZBD will be spinning on the turntables. You, of course, have to be 21 to attend and tickets are just 30 bucks in advance ($35 at the gate). Get a couple friends together, get to the park around 2 p.m. and enjoy the final days of summer because fall will be here before you know it, 1050 Lenox Park!

Be sure to look out for me. I’ll be wearing pink shoes, so you can’t miss me.

Dalí at The High

Posted on August 17, 2010 · Leave a Comment
[Portrait of Salvador Dali, Paris] (LOC)

Salvador Dali pre-eclectic mustache

The ever-so eccentric and talented artist Salvador Dali will finally be given his time at The High. The exhibit entitled Dalí: The Late Work, opened Saturday, August 7th and will be viewable until January 9, 2011. That gives you plenty of time to visit works like Portrait of My Dead Brother, in which Dalí prospects his dead brother’s “being.” His brother, who was also named Salvador, died at the age of 22 months (9 months before Dalí). Interesting outlook by an interesting man.

Salvador Dalí gave the world so much over his 84 years that it’s hard to show everything in one exhibit, so why not go see his later works (you can’t see his early works anyway)? Although he was at times overwhelming, you can’t deny that Dalí is and was one of the best artists to ever walk this earth.

Tickets to The High Museum are only $18 for adults unless you go on Tuesdays in August. The remaining Tuesdays in August are half off of adult walk-up tickets! So, you have 3 more chances to go on a Tuesday. If you like art you’ll enjoy this exhibit; it’s like nothing else you’ve ever seen before. Dalí was one of a kind! The High is literally 10 minutes from 1050 Lenox; there’s no reason not to go!

We Can Be Civil About This

The view from Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Ga jus...

Interesting view of Piedmont Park

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, the three-piece band (piano, guitar and drums) Civil Twilight relocated to Los Angeles (the land of milk and honey) in 2005 where they signed with record label Wind Up Records. They released their debut self-titled album in 2009 after a few scheduling issues and has been met with much acclaim!

After being featured in many TV spots, the group’s reputation has grown larger and they’ve hit the ground running touring with the likes of Evanescence and Three Days Grace. And now it’s your chance to see them perform live right here in Atlanta, not even 15 minutes away from 1050 Lenox at Piedmont Park.

Civil Twilight will play in Atlanta’s longest running concert, Unplugged in the Park. Every Sunday, 99X and Park Tavern present a new artist to play at Park Tavern at Piedmont Park all the way through October 24th. It’s FREE and it’s fun and it starts at 7:00 p.m.! The Kicks will open for Civil Twilight, so get there early and check them out as well. I’ll be there with my trademark pink shoes!

Dip ‘n Dab

Posted on August 9, 2010 · Leave a Comment

A Dip here and a Dab there..

Everyone has some artistic ability, whether you embrace it or not is another question. Some develop that talent/hobby into a  long-standing career like Bob Ross. Ross started out in the U.S. Air Force before realizing his painting talents made him more money than his record-keeping military job. Maybe you can be the next Bob Ross–”let’s put a nice happy tree right here.”

At Dip ‘n Dab your painting dreams can come true! They offer a “Night Class” that incorporates a BYOB standard into your night. Sign up for the class and you’ll receive guidance from a SCAD or AIA instructor for 2 to 3 hour session that could change your life (for the better)! You’ll get a blank 16×20 canvas, acrylic paints, other essentials like an easel, palette, brushes, an apron and of course a drinking cup (red Solo?).

You’ll be instructed through the class on whatever it is you’d like to create or replicate–landscape, still life or portrait. This is a perfect date night, even a first date if you have any artistic ability to show off! So, sign up to get your Bob Ross on.

This past weekend was their Grand Opening and they have amazing deals for the entire week. If you buy 1 class you get 1 FREE until August 14th as long as you register your friend for the same class. Not too bad, huh?

The studio is on Briarcliff, about 10 minutes from 1050 Lenox.

August in Atlanta

Posted on August 3, 2010 · Leave a Comment

It’s so hard to believe that it’s already August, it really seemed like June just yesterday. But, that’s how it goes in the summer months! Winter seems to creep along like an inch worm, but summer flies by. I guess the old adage is true–time flies when you’re having fun. But, what are you going to do but take advantage of the remaining extended days! So, let’s do just that.

Atlanta in August!

August is bringing plenty to do in the city of Atlanta, especially with film. We’ve recently opened up what seems to be a new “realm” in this city with Hollywood increasingly deciding to set up shop and film movies here. And I have no problems with those decisions because it gives me more of a chance to breakthrough into film (maybe Joel Schumacher will stop me and tell me I’m “perfect.”)

There are plenty of film festivals taking place in the city this August. Anywhere from Shortsfest to Horror Film Fest! No matter what your genre, I’m pretty sure there’s a “fest” for you. Let’s see…

  • Atlanta Shortsfest – August 6th-8th at the Plaza Theatre & Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge. The 3-day festival will feature 91 short films, sorted by genres such as comedy, animation, documentary, experimental, horror, sci-fi, personal, erotic, fantasy, drama, thrillers, action and adventure, and cult movies. You’ll definitely get your money’s worth!
  • Atlanta Horror Film Fest – August 13th-15th at the Spring 4th Center. In the likings of The Atlanta Ghost Tours, these 3 days will of course feature Horror movies, but will also cover subgenres like experimental, dark comedy and mystery.

There are more film festivals that will be available during the month and I recommend you check those out as well. This month is a bonafide  film month for our city, so let’s embrace it 1050 Lenox Park!
